My Take on 2008 Singles

by

Marc,

I know it’s your thing to put a yearly compilation together, but I was inspired by your post to make my own list of 2008 singles.  I’m not nearly as exotic as you are (where do you find some of that stuff?), but my choices are still all over the place. Everything in no particular order:

  1. Sex on Fire – Kings of Leon – I think I said it all here.
  2. Fix It – Ryan Adams & The Cardinals – Considering how much music this guy makes, he has potential to put out a lot of real shit, but somehow he doesn’t.
  3. Sometime Around Midnight – The Airborne Toxic Event – Great local band here in LA.  The whole album is so satisfying.
  4. Against Privacy – The Cold War Kids – I always feel like I’m too old to listen to them, maybe I’m not?
  5. Low – Flo Rida – Marc, I don’t care what you say, this song has me written all over it.  I literally pop out of my chair every time I hear it.
  6. Viva La Vida – Coldplay – Anyone who spent time with me over the summer already knows this…and probably hates this song because of me.
  7. Strange Overtones – David Byrne and Brian Eno – Like old school David Byrne, but better!  If that’s possible.
  8. Lost Coastlines – Okkervil River – Catching folk-rock.  Still kicking myself for missing some of their show at Lolla.
  9. Love Lockdown – Kanye West – I’m going to regret this because it’s going to go straight to your head, Kanye, but it’s SO good.
  10. I Don’t Care – Fall Out Boy – Go ahead.  I know you all are going to string me up for this one, but I LOVE it.  So catchy.
  11. Spiraling – Keane – This song would have been perfectly comfortable in 1988.  So was I.
  12. Human – The Killers – I don’t know why you can’t be “human” and “a dancer”, but as Fall Out Boy said, I don’t care.
  13. Meg White – Ray LaMontagne – “Meg White you’re all right.  In fact I think you’re pretty swell.  Can’t you tell?” “Baby you’re the bomb. Oh Jack is great, don’t get me wrong. But this is your song.”  Not since “David Duchovny, Why Won’t You Love Me” has there been a better stalking tribute song.
  14. Inni Mer Syngur Vitleysingur – Sigur Ros – Did you know it means, “Within Me a Lunatic Sings”?  That explains a lot of why I like it.
  15. American Boy – Estelle – She’s a future superstar.
  16. White Winter Hymnal – Fleet Foxes – Uplifting and 60ish.
  17. Shout Me Out – TV on the Radio – Slow building, but powerful once they get moving.
  18. Mrs. Officer – Lil’ Wayne – I’m not a huge rap fan, but the Jamacian Infusion on this track make me forget it…quickly.
  19. Bleeding Love – Leona Lewis – I miss real pop songs, like the kind we had when we were kids.
  20. Make You Feel My Love – Adele – Listen, I loved the Garth Brooks version of this song, please don’t mock me.  Adele handles it pretty deftly too.

So there is it.  We probably don’t agree on all of it, but that’s why we’re good friends, yes?

XO

Jamie

What about Little Joy and Brett Dennen and Duffy and…? But otherwise, I wholeheartedly agree.
